Porcelain Veneers to Correct Misshaped Incisors By Bruce Wilderman on July 06, 2017

A woman smiling to show off her porcelain veneersPorcelain veneers are primarily known as one of the most transformative and natural-looking of all cosmetic dentistry treatments, and rightfully so. Certainly, porcelain veneers are at the heart of some of the most dramatic smile makeovers, and they have helped to restore the self-image and self-esteem of countless patients whose teeth were in less than pristine shape. However, porcelain veneers are more versatile than many people realize.

In addition to concealing common aesthetic flaws such as cracks, chips, and discoloration, porcelain veneers can also be used to correct imperfections in the size and shape of teeth. In this sense, porcelain veneers can be used as a sort of orthodontic treatment, which is why they are often referred to as “instant orthodontics.”

At Artistic Expressions Dentistry, Dr. Bruce Wilderman commonly uses porcelain veneers to alter the shape of the incisors for patients. In using porcelain veneers for misshaped incisors at his Philadelphia, PA cosmetic, restorative, and general dentistry practice, Dr. Wilderman can improve both the alignment of the teeth and the occlusion, or the bite. Patients emerge from treatment with a smile that is more functional, not to mention aesthetically improved.

Are you a good candidate for porcelain veneers for misshaped incisors? To find out, we encourage you to schedule your initial consultation with Dr. Bruce Wilderman at Artistic Expressions Dentistry today.

Veneers to Lengthen or Widen the Incisors

You have a total of eight incisors in your mouth, or four in each jaw. The incisors are the four teeth at the front of your mouth in the upper and lower jaw. They are used primarily for biting and cutting food into smaller, easier-to-chew pieces. When you smile, these are also the teeth most visible to other people.

Ideally, when you clench your jaws, your upper and lower incisors would meet perfectly. The upper teeth would not overlap the lower teeth or vice-versa. Likewise, your incisors would not be separated by gaps. In this ideal scenario, they would be perfectly shaped to contribute to a strong, healthy alignment and bite.

If you are like many people, however, your incisors may not be the perfect length or width. They may be too short to come together properly when you close your jaws, or they may be so narrow that there are visible gaps between them. If so, porcelain veneers can be used to address these orthodontic issues.

Dr. Wilderman can customize porcelain veneers that extend the length or width of your incisors so that the alignment of your teeth and the integrity of your bite are corrected. Your oral health will be improved while your smile will appear rejuvenated and uniform. You may even experience an improvement in any jaw pain you might have been feeling due to bite problems.
