Philadelphia cosmetic dentist Bruce Wilderman has a rare ability to bring out the best in any smile. His eye for aesthetics, coupled with his finely honed dental skills and years of experience, allows him to transform nearly any smile into a work of art. Over the years, he has helped thousands of patients realize the full potential of their smiles.

Part of the reason that Dr. Wilderman has been able to produce such consistently outstanding results for his patients is that he understands that a beautiful smile must, first and foremost, be a healthy smile. Without good oral health, a patient cannot truly achieve a cosmetically pleasing smile, at least not one that will last for long. Ultimately, all smile makeovers, from the most subtle to the most dramatic, are built upon a foundation of healthy teeth and gums.

To that end, Dr. Wilderman offers a full range of general and restorative dentistry procedures to patients of Artistic Expressions Dentistry in Philadelphia. Scaling and root planing, for example, can be performed to prevent patients from succumbing to the effects of periodontal, or gum, disease. While gum disease is the most common disease among adults in the United States, affecting roughly two-thirds of the population, its effects don’t have to be devastating. By attending regular dental visits at Artistic Expressions Dentistry, you can avoid gingivitis and periodontist and ensure good gum health for many years to come.

What Are Scaling and Root Planing?

Over time, the bacteria that collect in the mouth can form into a sticky substance known as plaque. Brushing and flossing can help to remove bacteria and plaque from the mouth; however, these at-home hygiene habits are not sufficient in and of themselves. Regular professional cleanings are necessary to prevent plaque from causing periodontal disease.

In its earliest stages, gingivitis, periodontal disease is actually quite easy to treat. Scaling and root planing are among the most effective, yet simple treatments for removing built-up plaque from areas of the mouth that toothbrushes and dental floss cannot reach. Scaling is the process of removing plaque from below the gum line. It is also the only effective way to remove plaque that has hardened into tartar. This deep cleaning method helps to restore health to the gums and leave the teeth looking and feeling as healthy and pristine as possible.

Once scaling has been performed, root planing follows as a preventive measure against future bacteria build-up. Root planing is used to smooth the rough surfaces on the teeth and the tooth roots, essentially removing the spots where bacteria can easily take refuge and lead to the development of plaque and tartar.

If the teeth have already been damaged due to extensive tooth decay, Dr. Wilderman can rebuild those teeth through restorative dentistry services at his practice in Philadelphia. Dental crowns, for example, can be crafted to fit over the entire surface area of a tooth from which decayed areas have been removed, restoring health, beauty, and strength to the tooth while preserving the remaining natural structure from further harm.
