The Benefits of Dental Sealants
Tooth decay begins when bacteria are present in teeth and around the gums. While brushing can clean bacteria from smooth surfaces, it cannot eliminate the presence of bacteria completely. Bacteria are especially hard to eliminate from hard to reach areas of the mouth such as the back teeth or those with deep crevices. At Dr. Bruce Wilderman’s Philadelphia cosmetic dentistry practice, we use dental sealants to seal out bacteria and protect teeth from decay.
Dental Sealants
A dental sealant is a thin plastic coating that is applied to the chewing surface of the teeth. The sealant bonds into the grooves of the tooth to form a protective layer over the enamel of the tooth. Dental sealants are often placed on the back teeth such as molars and premolars. They are also recommended for teeth that have deep grooves. Dental sealants are used most often in children but they can be used on baby teeth and for adults as well.
The Procedure
The process of applying a dental sealant is quick and painless. This is a non-invasive procedure that only takes a few minutes. The procedure will begin with a dental cleaning of the tooth or teeth to be treated. Each tooth to be treated will be dried and cotton will be placed around the tooth to keep out any moisture during the procedure. An acid solution will be put on the teeth to roughen them up and ensure that the sealant will bond to the tooth. The tooth or teeth to be treated will then be rinsed and dried again. They are now ready for the application of the dental sealant. The sealant will be painted onto the tooth enamel. A special light may be used to help harden the sealant and bond it to the tooth.
Benefits of Dental Sealants
Dental sealants are highly recommended because application is simple, safe, and pain-free. Patients receiving dental sealants can expect the following benefits:
- Dental sealants block out bacteria and food particles to protect teeth from tooth decay and prevent the need for intensive dental work.
- Dental sealants can prevent cavities, especially when used on children between the ages of 6 and 14, when they are most likely to develop cavities.
- The application of dental sealants is painless and can be completed in just a few minutes.
- Dental sealants can be expected to last up to 10 years. If they wear out, they can easily be replaced.
